What is STCW?
Often seen as just another technical hurdle, the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) is in reality a vital lifeline. Established in 1978 and strengthened in 1995 and 2010, STCW sets the global benchmark ensuring every seafarer, across ranks and roles, is equipped to manage the rigour and unpredictability of seafaring.
STCW covers everyone, from officers to support staff, delivering the skills needed for safe, efficient operations and swift emergency response. With its focus on health, medical fitness and mental wellbeing, STCW builds resilient teams prepared for the changing challenges of modern shipping. Through certified training and regular audits, these standards are consistently upheld worldwide.
Why does STCW matter?
Human error is a factor in up to 80% of maritime incidents. STCW addresses this directly, establishing consistent training across 167 nations and reaching more than 1.6 million seafarers. It ensures every crew member is not just qualified on paper, but genuinely prepared for the demands and dangers of the work, from navigation to emergencies.
